15 Bouts of boxing makes for a very busy night at Beausie......
31st October 2023

With fifteen bouts of boxing crammed into the night it was non-stop action at the Guernsey Amalgamated Boxing Club's October Fright Night.
Once again the event took place in the David Ferguson Hall at Beau Sejour so there was plenty of room for the supporting crowd.
The visiting RAF & St Pauls team proved to be a strong opposition as the bout wins were nearly shared on the night - 6 for us, 7 for the visitors. Our boxers stood toe-to-toe against the opposition and did us proud.
Just in case you think I can’t count. The first two bouts were non scoring for the novice fighters.
My photo galleries cover every bout and you can view them by clicking this link:

Sarnia Swords v Royal Navy... in the dry!
21st October 2023

What a wet and miserable morning! What would be the perfect assignment then? How about an indoor shoot in Beau Sejour?

So this is how I found myself photographing fencing for the first time in years. The annual event I covered has been running for over fifty years - that's an impressive record by any standard.

My photos of the Sarnia Sword Club team competition against the Royal Navy are now online here:

Where is that elusive GFC win?
15th October 2023

A late goal coming from Ashford Town meant another defeat for Guernsey FC at Footes Lane on Saturday.

It was a close fought game with Guernsey having plenty of chances but they couldn't convert any into that elusive win. The next chance to bring some points home will be against Hanworth Villa on Saturday. Good luck guys.

....and it's another fast moving indoor Sport in the same week!
12th October 2023

Another of this weeks evening assignments was of a different fast moving indoor sport. This time it was Table Tennis in front of my lens.

The event was the Lions Senior Tournament at the Hougue du Pommier. Like the previous nights action in the Basketball League, Table Tennis challenges a photographer by the speed of play and the lighting that is never as bright as we would like!

But as the winter approaches we can't have it all our own way... sometimes it's just nice to be inside, dry and warm!

I've added a Gallery featuring a few of my photos here:

I welcome back indoors sports photography.......
11th October 2023

As the evenings grow darker I've found myself back indoors for some of my Sports photography.

With the winter months creeping closer it can be nice to have a warm and dry place to 'run to' when things turn inclement outside! The bonus is that I really enjoy the challenge of photographing the fast moving sport of Basketball.

One of this weeks assignments was to cover the start of the new basketball league at Beau Sejour. I managed to photograph the Women's Oracle Diamonds v Ravenscroft and Canon GSY Expats v Concept Interiors.

I'm sure I'll be back for some more of this (in comfort!) action photography.

My old legs had no chance of keeping up with the youngsters!
03rd October 2023

Guernsey based Zedra is a leading financial services Company that has supported the Guernsey Athletics 'X Challenge' for several years.

This event brings Schools teams from across the Island to compete in a Cross Country with a difference.

The Athletes race in Year groups and School Teams with a points system sorting a winner at the end.

I was asked to cover the 2023 event at Footes Lane and I was suprised by how busy the afternoon was! The racing was none-stop and it ended with me having quite a workout of my own as I chased around trying to keep up with the youngsters. Let's be honest, that was never going to happen!

I did manage to get some good photos though. They are now all online here:

The latest Enduro Series photos are online......
24th September 2023

After a hectic day yesterday, this morning I found myself in a picturesque scene at Pleinmont for Round 7 of the GVC Enduro Gravity Series sponsored by Adventure Cycles.

My time was limited as I had to get along to the Tennis Centre to photograph the Island Singles Finals but there was time to grab a few action shots.

Two busy nights of Junior Cup football.....
08th September 2023

This week I've enjoyed photographing the future.... you need an extra long lens to achieve this!!

I looked into the future of competitive football in Guernsey and I have to say that it looked pretty good.

This is the time of year for some of the Junior Cups to be contested. As I mentioned in the previous Blog the enthusiasm shown by the young teams was an inspiration.

The second Cup action I photographed this week was the Le Vallee Cup which is for Under 14's. The series of games leading to a final was held at Blanche Pierre Lane and on this occasion it was Rovers name that will be engraved on the Cup. Well done to them.

Sylvans win the 2023 Duquemin Cup after penalties....
07th September 2023

I photographed a full evening of Duquemin Cup Under 16's football action at North Field on Wednesday.

I think it is this age group of players who really start to show their skills learnt in the younger years. There was some real talent on show and the overall commitment was very impressive.

Congratulations to Sylvans on winning a closely fought competition. However it did take a tense penalty shoot-out to decide this result over North.

Roots kick the MTB Gravity riders out of the saddle....
05th September 2023

The GVC MTB riders were back on the slopes of Petit Bot for Round 6 of their Gravity series on Sunday.

I was also out enjoying a very pleasant morning following the action.

The high contrast between shadows and sun spots made my work 'interesting'.... but I think the riders had it much harder as the exposed roots kicked quite a few from the saddle!

The pics are now online in a new Gallery:

Football, Floodlights and Rain.... welcome to winter
30th August 2023

Football, Floodlights and Rain.... welcome to winter.

But hold on, it's still only August! And they wonder why we talk about the weather so much!

I braved the conditions to photograph the Martinez Cup game at The Track. Rovers 2 - North 1. Thankfully no penalties to extend the misery!

Cricket.... such a relaxing photoshoot!
16th August 2023

Cricket is a game that I don't photograph enough and I must try to put that right.

The casual pace of this Sport is an oasis of calm and stress free photography when compared to some of the other Sports I photograph. Every time I visit KGV to cover a match I leave a little more chilled!

This makes Cricket the perfect game to spend an afternoon watching and chilling out at.

Another benefit with Cricket photography and an additional plus is that, unlike many of the other Sports I photograph, when the weather turns inclement, dull or damp the play is called off.

By contrast at a Rugby game or Motocross race competitors seem to relish getting wet and mucky... meaning the poor photographer gets into the same state too!

I recently spent an hour or so photographing the Belasko Channel Islands Cricket League at KGV... Canaccord Genuity Griffins v St Ouen Springfield.

Raiders are hot in pre-season warm-up.......
14th August 2023

This was a pre-season match for Guernsey Raiders against visitors Havant.

With our team scoring seven tries for a 43-19 win they seem to be in decent form ahead of the 2023 National Two East League starting.

I popped over the fence at half-time during the GFC football and took a few pics of the Rugby.

They're now online here on my new website:

It's the stuff of football fairy-tales.....
13th August 2023

Well I don't know who was writing the script but the part they wrote for Jack Griffin was a good'n!

The scene was set. We have this (just) sixteen year old sitting on the bench and GFC have just equalised at 1-1.

The manager chooses to give young Jack his chance to debut for the local side and this is when the story turns into a football fairy-tale.

You really couldn't have written it better as he comes on and scores to secure a win for GFC in his first play and the first game of the Isthmian South Central League season!

Nice one Jack.

I've got pics of all the action in a new Gallery. Click the link to view them on my new Website.

Exciting times as I look for a new challenge.....
06th July 2023

We all know that time flies. Certainly as I get older whole decades seem to pass with the blink of an eyelid!

And it is the passage of time and the continued progress with technology that has made me think that I needed a new project.

The Internet has become the dominant resource for a photographer to present his work to interested people. Tagged on the back of that is the opportunity to sell a few pics. Even a photographer needs to eat and buy beer!

So I'm announcing here that this website won't be where my new work is uploaded in the future. I have a new website under development... more on that later.

But the good news is all the Photos, Blogs and Information that features here will remain just as it is. I have built this massive record of Guernsey life... Sports, Motorsports, Gigs, Bands and Social Life and I'm keen for it to still be available. This 'old' website is now thirteen years old and has accrued nearly 50 MILLION picture views!

However with the improvement of mobile phone screens, faster download speeds and expectations of how photos display I will be uploading all new work to a new website. It still carries a title that regulars will be familiar with... TALLPICTURES.com

This is a major project for me as I hope to carry some of the old Galleries across too, but that all depends on time. Yes time gets a mention again!

I wonder what the next blink of the eye brings?

The King of the North showcased some great action......
21st June 2023

Well that's sorted. The full edit of all the Boxfit 'King of the North' action and atmosphere is now online.

This was a great event. We were blessed with nice weather and the crowd of supporters really enjoyed a relaxed afternoon of beer, sport and sun.... not a difficult sell really!!

With twelve bouts on the bill I was kept busy following the fast moving action and there were some real highlights.

This Boxfit event is all about taking a fighter out of the gym environment and allowing them the chance to 'tick that box' by stepping into a ring in front of a rowdy crowd of supporters.

Without question, even though some of the fights are clearly not 'full on', every person who slipped between the ropes to face up their opponent showed real bravery... and maybe they have now ticked something off their 'bucket list?

Amongst the twelve bouts, however, were a few that could have been in the lineup of our local Dinner Boxing evenings. Those boxers showed enough talent to take the sport a bit more seriously. Maybe I'll be photographing them again sometime soon?

Practice makes perfect.....
18th June 2023

The Guernsey MTB XC riders were out in force today racing on an energy sapping course at L'Ancresse.

This was the final test of the 2023 Island Games course.

It is important that every aspect is tested ahead of the main event and with the eyes of all the visiting teams looking at us the GVC wants things to run perfectly and smoothly. I have a feeling that everything is coming into place due to this meticulous preparation.

I was out doing my bit today. Even if it was only chasing around the common looking for the best vantage points!

The results of my efforts are now online. Follow this link to view the pics:

MTB XC in the park, in the evening sun.....
09th June 2023

The GVC held another Round of their 2023 MTB XC Summer Crit Series yesterday evening at Delancey Park.

Their was a good entry across the classes with riders enjoying a lovely sunny eve.

The track followed the Island Games circuit so our local competitors were pushing hard ahead of the growing excitement before the big one!

I've uploaded a new Gallery of pics here:

All Downhill at Dos d'Ane......
23rd May 2023

It was all downhill for the GVC MTB riders on Sunday at the Dos d'Ane.

The site almost seems to hide how much steep gradient there is on the slopes.

A narrow twisting track had been hacked through the bracken and bushes all the way to the top. The riders needed careful commitment as there was little space to recover from any errors.

There was also a need to send riders up to the start-line in small groups due to the limited space up there. It was also impossible for me to work along most of the upper section due to space.

All this talk of restricted space had no effect on the enjoyment for the racers who seemed to love the challenge.

Things are hotting up ahead of the Island Games....
22nd May 2023

One of the assignments for me over the weekend was to visit the Athletics track at Footes Lane to capture some of the Guernsey Athletics Track & Field event.

With the 2023 Island Games just weeks away the excitement and anticipation could be felt around the newly cleaned and marked all-weather track.

The conditions on Sunday were excellent for competition and we must hope for something similar for the Games. All things are crossed!

There was a small gremlin in the timing gear which made a delay and reduced what I could cover before moving on to the next job. It was perhaps fortuitous that the problem showed up now rather than on the big day! Once fixed everything ran very well.
