A close encounter of a shocking kind.....
20th September 2021

It’s OK, I’m fine.

But that was a shockingly close encounter for me.

Whilst photographing the start of the Graniteman Triathlon I found myself (nearly) taking a landscape picture!! Strictly speaking it was probably more like a seascape really!

This has left me quite unsettled as I haven’t ventured near that genre for nearly twenty years. In fact not since I started taking pics professionally!

Somehow the types of photography that gave me so much pleasure during my Royal Photographic Society and Camera Club days don’t seem to have space and time in my current working week.

Whilst editing the photoshoot of the 2021 Guernsey Graniteman Triathlon I realised that maybe I need to re-awaken some of that old passion. However I also have to concede that there are many truly talented landscape photographers in Guernsey who produce outstanding work.... and also don’t mind getting out of bed for the early morning atmospheric light.

I’m definitely more of a night person. So upon further reflection I think I’m going to stick with what I do.

I’ll leave the scenic pics to those who know what they are doing... and can get out of bed!

Oh, and if you are wondering what made me start thinking about all this, the photo at the top of this Blog will help you understand.

The juniors battle with guitars and drum sticks....
08th September 2021

If any events are going to confirm that we are emerging from the Covid 19 restrictions and getting back to 'near normal' the two evenings I have spent in Beau Sejour theatre photographing the School of Popular Music Battle of the Bands are the ones to do it.

For 2021 there was a 'double header' with the addition of an Under 18's battle on the first night followed by the Corporate Bands battle on the next eve. THIS GALLERY FEATURES THE CORPORATE BANDS

As we now expect, the standard of talent in the young bands was very impressive. The tuition, the practicing and the notable live performance experience already amassed by these guys was clearly on show in some amazing performances.

The audience in Beausie was really supportive raising the confidence of the bands resulting in a difficult choice for the four judges. Ultimately is was Sonic Bomb who took the trophy home.

Take a look through the galleries featuring each band and some of the atmosphere...

Beau Sejour rocks to the 2021 Corporate Battle of the Bands.....
06th September 2021

The 2021 edition of the School of Popular Music Corporate Battle of the Bands was performed in front of a sellout audience in the theatre at Beau Sejour.

This was also the venue for the previous nights Under 18's Battle of the Bands... a full gallery of pics will follow.

The atmosphere in the theatre was fantastic, full of anticipation and no doubt quite a few nerves, but once the bands took to the stage they were supported by the large and vocal crowd. There was a mix of seasoned performers together with 'first-timers' but the bottom line is that everyone did brilliantly.

This gallery features all the bands, the atmosphere in the theatre and the opening band, Sonic Bomb, fresh from winning the Under 18's Battle the previous night.

Enjoying King of the Ring in the sun... with a beer or two!
05th September 2021

On Saturday the 'King of the Ring' returned to KGV for 17 bouts of White Collar Boxing offering a full late afternoon and evening of entertainment.

The huge gathering was reported to be around 2000 for Round 4 of the King of the Ring.

The warm summers evening relaxed the supporters who needed little encouragement to drink and party from late afternoon and through the evening. The Breda can count on some of the tables would have needed a calculator to tally!!

Revelers clearly enjoyed the entertainment with many of the fighters ticking the 'try boxing' box.

This gallery showcases some of the atmosphere and all seventeen bouts....

A quarry is the perfect backdrop for MTB riding...
28th August 2021

The Ronez MTB Mayhem 2021 was held in perfect conditions this year.

I didn't cover this event last year but I was reliably informed that it was held in near monsoon conditions. I can't actually recall, but I guess I must have peaked around the curtains and returned to my bed last year.

But it was well worth my effort this year as the setting, deep in the Ronez Les Vardes Quarry, is the perfect backdrop for MTB riding.

This Charity event raised money for the Sarah Groves Foundation and Prostrate Cancer UK.

There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere as no-one was under any pressure as it wasn't a race day. Riders could 'help themselves' to any of the jumps and features that had been set up... as many times as they liked!

Of course it was the juniors who showed that they have boundless energy. However I'm sure they are now guaranteed a good nights sleep!

Beer and mowers make an unmissable attraction in Sark...
27th August 2021

The Channel Islands Lawn Mower Racing Association returned to the Sark Harbour Hill for their first event of the 2021 double-header race weekend.

The beautiful and friendly isle of Sark welcomes a large bunch of motorsport followers who travel over to offer support.

But perhaps it isn't just the racing that attracts the spectators but what Sark offers in the way of a pub at the finish line and loads of the Sark chill-out vibe! You can make up your own mind about that one!

I went over to capture some of the hill climb action... nothing to do with having a beer or two as well!

35 MILLION reasons to party.....
23rd August 2021

Whilst I was enjoying the party atmosphere in the Vraiceaters Arms at the West Show this website smashed through another milestone of picture views recorded.

Once again I have to thank you for the continued interest in my pics. It is rewarding to see how many people visit the picture galleries every day. The running total of views is now more than THIRTY-FIVE MILLION!

I study the analytics and statistics of the viewings to understand what coverage is the most popular but it's fascinating to see that every genre of my work gets it's 'moment' of taking top spot.

It seems that the people who pop along here for a few minutes all have their own different interests.

I'm pleased to say that I continue to enjoy my profession... a LOT! It is a real privilege to photograph so many different events and people and my time spent behind the lens has expanded my knowledge and love for the community we share in Guernsey.

I hope I am able to continue taking pics for many years yet - if only to give me an excuse to buy new kit!

There is another new mirrorless Nikon camera (the Nikon Z9) on the way and I can't wait to see how the technology has continued to improve.

One thing is certain. There will be no shortage of news, events, sports, gigs and occasions for me to feature in my galleries. I hope to see you viewing them again sometime soon.

Bowls with a view... what a view!
22nd August 2021

The Delancey bowling rink enjoys a very special setting. From its elevated position is offers a view toward all the other Channel Islands.

On a clear and sunny day the coast of France offers a backdrop to the scene. All this could be a distraction to play but as with all sports there is an underlining competitive edge... even in 'social' bowls games! Players have no interest in anything other than their play.

Last week I was asked to pop along to Delancey to photograph the action between NBA and Vale Rec. I've added a small gallery here:

Oh what a night.... cue the music!
20th August 2021

Last night at the West Show the huge Vraiceaters Arms was splitting at the seams as a huge'er (is that even a word!??) crowd overflowed it for the second time as live bands took to the stage.

It was certainly a challenge to capture any pics in a ram-packed crowd but I did get a few :-)

Worse still, it was an even bigger challenge to get to the front of the queue at the bar. Even though it must have been more than 60ft long!!

But looking how the 'party' went I think that many people DID get a drink (several)... their mid-week hangover this morning would have proved that!

I've just added a new Gallery featuring the ever popular Last of the Light Brigade.

The edit of headliners City Limits awaits. This set was even harder to photograph as I experienced maybe the tightest packed crowd ever in front of the stage as the young West Show crowd discovered what live music is all about.

Did they miss their usual distraction of the Fun Fair... judging by appearances, I don't think so!!!

How to party out in the West.....
18th August 2021

They know how to party out in the West at the annual West Show.

The formula they use is tried and tested. Erect a big tent, build a big bar, organize a few bands.... and invite all your friends!

What do you have? A MASSIVE PARTY!!

I've just added pics of the Wednesday night headliners on the Vraiceater's Tavern stage - Stuck to the Ceiling.

I'll be there for the Thursday night when Last of the Light Brigade and City Limits keep the party swinging. Those pics will follow.

See you at the party?

I've just been photo-bombed by the junior MTB riders.....
15th August 2021

It was only in the edit of my MTB Downhill pics that I realized that I think I was 'Photo-bombed' by some of the junior riders!

As I worked through the one hundred and seventy pics I kept getting a feeling of deja vu. I was sure I'd just seen that pic before!

On closer inspection I worked it out.

It seems that a few of the juniors had decided that this was the perfect chance to have a photograph of their (very brave) jumps 'into space' off the new ramp at La Pomare.

I had started the morning scouting for the best angles and found a perfect spot whilst the guys were practicing. And as I was engrossed in my work I captured multiple pics!

Now, usually, I'd have a quick cull to get rid of duplicates and get the numbers down but I decided that on this occasion this would just be rude and disrespectful for the efforts shown by the lads to quickly make a circuit and leap again.

So, if you do take a look at the new gallery, you will see that I've kept all the pics.... after all each one is slightly different, and it stands as a record of the fun they had.

Records tumble including the big one!
14th August 2021

This Guernsey Kart & Motor Club hill climb was notable for several reasons. Firstly it was hot and sunny! Always a good start!

Secondly it was a record breaker... and Nick Saunders went for 'gold' with his overall Kart Club record for Les Val des Terres with a time of 27.26sec.

This is an astonishing time but Nick deserves the accolade as he has been chipping away and slowly modifying his car. Nick now has to look at beating a 26.99sec time - the all-time hill record set by 'Nationals' driver Scott Moran at a Car Club National event.

That time is tantalizingly close. Not even Darren Warwick has bettered that one. But watch this space!

Other record breakers were John Dunne, Sam Heathcote and Lee Poole. Well done guys.

The pic at the top of this Blog features two record breakers for the price of one! Local legend John Dunne watches Nick Saunders (also a local legend) head to the line for another run.

Yellow is the colour.....
10th August 2021

The referee left us in no doubt about which colour is his favorite at The Track this evening.

The semi-final of the 2021 Rawlinson Cup between North and Vale Rec featured a dozen views of the yellow card AND was supported by use of a ten minute Sin Bin.

As an onlooker I didn't see the game as being as 'dirty' as a twelve yellow card monster but maybe the officials are trying to set the tone early at the start of this new season.

Perhaps they are going to demand a game without any marginal contact and NO back chat from the players? I wish them luck!

I've uploaded a gallery of pics here:

There were darts flying in every corner....
07th August 2021

With a limited size entry the 2021 Darts Grand Slam was an early sell-out. The players who secured a place were the lucky few.

The competition was held at the Northerners Club House and it was a hive of activity when I popped along to take a few pics.

It's too easy to drop into nostalgia at a show like this.....
05th August 2021

The 2021 Guernsey Agricultural Show was a vintage edition in all forms.

The idea behind this popular show is to take us back to how things used to be in farming, transport, fair grounds, military service - and the list goes on.

This year there were visiting shire horses, steam engines and a vintage fair. Sheep racing, straw baling, tractor displays, fur and feather tents and live music all added up to two full days of entertainment.

A particular highlight this year was a very impressive military display which was beautifully presented and featured many vehicles and 'battlefield' tented displays. The range of equipment on show offered endless interest. Well done to those involved in organizing it.

The length of the line of vehicles waiting to get into the car park was proof that many of us have a soft spot for the past. Maybe we imagine that life was so much better then?

However I think that most of us would have quite a shock if we actually had to go back to those times.

Just as well that we can enjoy both periods by visiting this wonderful vintage show.

I have uploaded a huge gallery of pics for you to view here:

How to party like only the young can do.......
03rd August 2021

The School of Popular Music Summer Party is the traditional end to their week long Summer School. Students spend their time learning new music and forming bands and friendships.

The highlight of the week is this Summer Party where parents and friends are invited along to enjoy the practiced performances of the students.

There is only one thing left to do at the end of this busy night... get to bed to be fresh and eager for the next morning when everyone heads off to Herm for more fun and music!

How I envy the energy and enthusiasm of youth!!

I've added a new Gallery of pics here:

Mens Island Tostevin Triples takes to the Bowls Green.....
28th July 2021

There was play across the rinks as the Mens Island Tostevin Triples was contested.

I've added a gallery here which can be viewed by following this link:

Two days of sand racing... they can't get enough of it!
25th July 2021

Maybe I was one of the doubters about whether a 2-day Sand Racing meeting could work. After all, most competitors are regular working guys and gals.... would they be prepared or able to take time off work for a Friday race?

The proof was in the eating (maybe an ice-cream as we were on the beach) and the entry was big enough on both days to justify the effort.

In fact it was me who found it difficult to find the time to give proper coverage but I did get down on the sands for both days. These are my pics....

A younger me would have captured the 'shot of the day'!
25th July 2021

There was an 'end of term' vibe at the final Day-7 of the 2021 Trident Trust All Terrain Challenge in Herm.

Even the rain couldn't dampen the excitement and anticipation before the start... and my goodness did it try!!

The runners who joined me on the 15:15 Travel Trident were met by a Niagara Falls of muddy water on the Rosaire Steps!

After my lack of enthusiasm at the Saints Bay Hill where my 'photo opportunities' were limited the final event in Herm was a treasure! And to think I nearly didn't go!!

Of course any day that ends with a beer or two has a head start.

But whilst I'm really pleased with the 'story telling' of my pics I know that I actually missed what was probably the 'shot of the day'. This (would have been) of the torrent of muddy water that greeted us at the Rosaire steps... and the rain was still coming down in biblical amounts!

I have to admit that a younger me would have made the effort, whatever the discomfort and risk to equipment, to capture the moment but I have to concede that my youthful enthusiasm seems to have left the room!!

Hopefully I did get a few good pics?

Clearly I was enjoying the ATC too much, so this happens.....
23rd July 2021

Day 6 of the Trident Trust All Terrain Challenge was a real dampener on the previous days of racing, literally.

The evening's run was held at the Saints Bay hill... is hill a big enough word for this incline?

The course is relentlessly steep as it climbs straight (no helpful switchbacks to ease the slope) from the kiosk on the beach and onward towards the top of the cliffs.

The dampener was the torrential rain just before the start. We all got a soaking. Maybe the runners enjoyed the relief from the other nights heat but for me it was just uncomfortable. Also a factor was the low light under the trees which restricted the variety of pics I could capture. Ultimately this was not a very fulfilling night for a 'tog. Better luck in Herm for day 7?

The pics are now online. I offer my apologise for the repetitive nature of the shots.... I've already made my excuses, ha, ha!
