U.K Subs at The Fermain Tavern... another legendary gig?
07th June 2011
The U.K. Subs played a fantastic gig at The Fermain Tavern, Guernsey on 3rd June 2011.
This gig must feature in my Top 10 ever and I highly recommend that you get to see this band if they appear in a town near you.
If you ever need to convince yourself that music is 'best taken live' this band will prove it to you!
The re-designed Fermain Tavern has really done justice to it's heritage as a live music venue and I would encourage you to support Chris, the landlord, in the coming months. Great Bands like the U.K. Subs don't come cheap and you guys (and gals) need to support 'The Tav' if it is to continue with these top promotions.
See you next time?

Mitch Godden was the class act... again!
05th June 2011
Mitch Godden might not race on the sand very often... indeed I think the annual visit to Guernsey for the 'Condor Ferries Sand Ace' meeting is the only time he sees the beach each year.
It certainly doesn't show! From the first lap on the sand Mitch looks at home and unbeatable... again.
So it was a case of who would take the runner-up positions. Well done to local racer, Anthony Queripel for placing second in the A Final followed by Dan Winterton (he nearly qualifies as a Guernseyman now!).
The days entertainment was completed when Dan and Gareth Winterburn went for a 'skinny-dip' at the end of the racing. Remember, it was low tide. That makes for a long walk back after cooling off!
If you want to take a look at the racing action - and the skinny-dip (you have been warned) click on this link.

VEF 'Beach Life' 2011 was a sell-out...
02nd June 2011
The Vale Earth Fair Collective returned with 'Beach Life 2011' held in Petit Bot valley last weekend. This venue is perfect for an event like this as it provides an 'intimate' atmosphere which must be unique to Guernsey.
As always these events begin very low key and chilled and gradually build as the sun goes down. Rumour has it that full capacity was reached and many party-goers had to queue to gain access.
Beach Life is a warm-up and fund raiser for the Vale Earth Fair Collectives main event of the year which is of course the Earth Fair itself. This is happening in Vale Castle at the end of August... see you there.

Sugar Slam gig at Pieces Bar... pics now on-line
31st May 2011
So much has been happening over the weekend that it seems ages since I photographed a great gig by Sugar Slam at Pieces Bar. But, having re-checked the calendar, it really was only last Friday!
Sugar Slam are one of my favourites and they stormed through a tight set - including a couple of new songs.
I have now added pictures of the gig to the Gallery.

Guernsey Kart & Motor Club Hill Climb pics...
31st May 2011
On a day that conditions were certainly less than perfect for part of the event there were some very impresive times posted. Ten new records in total!
My driver of the day was Tim Torode who managed to join the elite sub-30 second club in a car that really shouldn't be able to match the 'big guns'. I witnessed the run from the top of the hill and captured a shot of just how close and hard you have to push to achieve this sort of result.

I have now added a large Gallery of pics featuring the days racing. As always, if you like what you see, you can purchase pics by clicking the BUY NOW button below each picture.

Guernsey Powerboat Association Round-3
28th May 2011
It was pretty choppy out there in the Little Russell this afternoon for Round-3 of the Guernsey Powerboat Association's 2011 Championship.
These conditions are a real challenge for competitor and photographer alike!
When taking pics when the sea is so bumpy you know that the boats will be flying - literally - between troughs. The challenge is to capture the moment and get it in sharp focus whilst using a 600mm lens from a wildly rocking platform.
I love a challenge!
A big thank you to Addie Marsh for allowing me to use his boat for the pics.

There was Frenzy at the Tavern
25th May 2011
I have looked up the meaning of the word - and 'Frenzy' can mean craze, delirium, hysteria and manic disorder.
Now I won't claim that these descriptions could be used for the state of behaviour at The Fermain Tavern when Frenzy played last week but the Band did their best to excite such riotous fun!
Unfortunately there was a general lack of people which is a great shame and their loss as this was a great night out.
Supporting Frenzy were Peppered Ant Legs (one of my favourite bands - says something about my age I think) and The Crowman.
I have added picture Galleries for the bands.

Now we're talk'in... a sunny Race Meeting on Vazon beach
23rd May 2011
]
What a nice contrast to the first Sand Race meeting. Having got wet through at the first race meeting in 2011 it was much more pleasant to spend the afternoon on a sunny Vazon beach!
The 'cherry on the cake' was to see such a good entry in the Bikes Class, this shows promise for a good seasons racing.
So I was kept busy taking pics... they are now on-line. Check-out the Gallery by clicking this link.

Pics of the last Autocross racing before the Summer break
16th May 2011
The Guernsey Autocross Club held Round-4 of their Summer Championship at Chouet Beach yesterday. The racing now takes a break until the Autumn. The track layout had to be adapted to compensate for the condition of the beach but nothing was going to prevent a good days racing.
As always there were a few roll-overs - three by a little yellow Fiat - now that's just greedy! I managed to capture two of them!
A new gallery of pics has now been added.

Crowns played at a Folkal Point evening at the Fermain Tavern
15th May 2011
The Crowns played a Folkal Point evening at the Fermain Tavern yesterday. The event was a sell-out and signals another successful Sark Folk Festival - this was the last Folkal Point event before the Festival.
Photographing the band was a challenge under the very low level of lighting. For any photogs reading this a common setting using ISO-3200 at F2.8 would only give about 40th second... not ideal for sharp pics!
The pictures have now been added to a new Gallery

One of my favourite photoshoots has to be 'Promo' pics for Bands...
13th May 2011
One of the 'perks' I have in my job is that I get invited to capture Bands for their 'Promo' pics.
I guess I am best known for my 'Live Performance' photography but it is always nice to have a bit more time to capture the character of a Band in the studio or on location. A real treat for me is when I have the chance to do a bit of 'fly on the wall' photography of a Band during recording or practice sessions.
If you are a Solo Artist or in a Band and you would like me to shoot you (not literally!!) please e-mail me and we can chat about your ideas.

Round-1 of the Summer Sand Racing Championship... and it rained!
11th May 2011
We must hope that it hasn't established what type of weather we will have for the 2011 Guernsey Motor Cycle & Car Club Sand Racing Championship on Vazon beach but Round-1 was pretty miserable!
It was a shame because there were a few new riders and sliders turning out - and we don't want to put them off this early in the season!
I guess though that when you are racing you expect to get wet and covered in sand - so a bit off rain makes no difference. It is the poor photographer who has to struggle to keep his kit dry and the lens free from splashes.
However it was good to be back on the beach, I managed to get a few pictures and they are now on-line.

Skore play at the Fermain Tavern supported by The Risk
11th May 2011
The Skore recently played a couple of gigs in the Channel Islands. These were promoted by Derrick Williams. The first was a charity night in his home Island of Alderney followed by a gig at the Fermain Tavern in Guernsey. Local band 'The Risk' supported on both nights... and they were feeling the pain when they returned to Guernsey. Something to do with the Alderney's famous hospitality!
Take a look at the Galleries here.

Liberation Day 2011 - 'Lib Rock' Gallery on-line
10th May 2011
Liberation Day in Guernsey came to a lively end in 2011 when 'Lib Rock' did what it says on the tin... it rocked a big crowd with a line-up of four bands.
First on stage where The Barlows followed by Breaking the Silence who had a large group of fans making the best of the mild evening. Next up were one of my favourite local bands Last of the Light Brigade with visiting tribute band the Killerz headling.

The Kings of Metal rock Fermain Stadium
08th May 2011
It was billed as a 'Stadium Show' and - given the confines of the Fermain Tavern - it was about as close as you are going to get in Guernsey!
Nemesis held their launch gig for their new recording 'Forever in Metal' at the Fermain Tavern last Friday and produced the goods... as expected. If you are into Metal you missed a treat as this band knows all the moves, writes a good line of Metal and can play a bit!
The performance was aided by Mark Guillou's great sound and lighting set-up. This all goes to make a photographic treat. So I was there to capture the atmosphere. Take a look at the new picture Gallery.

Guernseymotorsport.com sponsor Round-2 of Kart Championship
05th May 2011
I was pleased to be able to sponsor Round-2 of the Guernsey Kart & Motor Club Summer Kart Championship last Sunday at 'The Track'.
I am probably recognised for attending most of the Motor Sport events held on this little Island and like to help the Clubs continue to organise these meetings. Sponsorship helps a little towards the heavy costs associated with these events.
Kart racing represents the only 'tarmac circuit' racing available in Guernsey and the Cadet Classes are a good training ground for future talent. So I feel I am 'doing my bit' towards the continuation of the sport.
Now the 'hard sell'!! I have added a Gallery of new pictures which can be purchased on-line by simply clicking on the BUY NOW button... sales pitch over!

GMC&CC Hill Climb rained off early...
04th May 2011
The Bank Holiday Monday proved to be a bit of a let-down for a couple of Guernsey's sporting events. The Horse Racing was called off early due to the wet conditions and the Hill Climb also went the same way.
With so few opportunities to race 'The Terres' each year it is a real shame when the racing is cancelled.
Having said that, it was pretty wet! However there is opportunity, when properly kitted out with rain protection for the cameras and lens, to get a few more unusual pics... but things finished a bit too soon for me! Oh well, I did manage a few 'wet pics'.

Farewell King Rat and the Soul Cats...
01st May 2011
King Rat and the Soul Cats returned to one of their old haunts to play two farewell gigs last Saturday & Sunday. The new Fermain Tavern played its part in making the occasion memorable for a responsive audience - many of them were there (like me) to remember the many great King Rat gigs that we have enjoyed in the past.
The band were fantastic. It is hard to believe that they won't play again but Chris Dean insisted that this is the end. We live in hope that there will be a comeback one day!
I have added new pictures to the King Rat Gallery. This Gallery must be one of my biggest featuring 'Bands'... but there are a lot of them, eh!

Rock of Ages-9 picture Galleries now complete...

Well I hope you like the final Gallery of pics featuring all the Bands who played at the latest Rock of Ages - this was number nine!
The event has grown in popularity, and with it the amount of work it takes for me to prepare the pictures for display. This latest batch of six Bands has taken two days (shooting & prep).
I really appreciate the comments and compliments that have been made and am happy to put the pics online for your enjoyment... but don't forget that a couple of purchases will encourage me to continue.
I (try) and make a living from photography and something has to pay for the beer (oh, and my missus expects food on the table too)!
So what about buying a digital file (only £4) or there are loads of print options?

Rock of Ages-9... best ever?
29th April 2011
If you judge the success of an Event by the number of people attending then Mark Guillou's Rock of Ages-9 has to be the best so far!
But of course the real success is made by the quality of the Bands playing. And here again many will consider this the best so far.
Mark is a great supporter of young new talent and once again most of the Bands were still of 'school age' but performed like they had been doing this for years.
With Rock of Ages getting bigger all the time you will have to arrive early for the next one to avoid the disappointment of not getting into a 'full house'.
If you missed the latest, why not check-out my picture Gallery to see what you missed. The first three bands of the six that played are now on-line - MX2, China Aster & Re-Discovering Pluto.
